Dr ‘Akau‘ola re-appointed as Health CEO [1]

Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola has been reappointed as the Ministry of Health’s Chief Executive Officer for a period of four years starting last Thursday, 16 May.
The Public Service Commission stated this will be his fourth consecutive term as CEO since he was first appointed in 2009.
In addition to the CEO role, Dr ‘Akau’ola is the Chairman of several professional committees such as the National Committee for the control of NCD, Mental Health Advisory Committee, National Drugs and Medical Supplies Committee, National Health Development Committee Technical Subcommittee, and Health, Nutrition and WASH cluster committee.
He is also a member of the Health Emergency Management Committee, Tonga National Qualifications and Accreditation Board (TNQAB) and the National Emergency Management Committee.
Dr 'Akau'ola holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pathology (1995) from the University of Otago, New Zealand, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (1984) from the University of Papua New Guinea, Papua New Guinea, and a Certificate in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery (1989) from Australia.
Dr ‘Akau’ola began his career in the public service as a Medical Officer in 1986 and held several senior management positions.
In the CEO role, he is responsible for planning and directing programs and activities of the Tonga Health Service to promote the health of the people of Tonga within defined financial and other resources. He is also responsible for ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive, balanced, coordinated, effective and efficient health service in Tonga.
