Tongan hip hop squad in NZ competition [1]

Tongan hip hop dancers, Onion Squad, depart for New Zealand. 15 April 2019.
Six Tongan hip hop dancers, calling themselves the Onion Squad, will be competing on April 16-18 at the Hip Hop Pacific Islands competition in Manukau City, Auckland.
 
The boys who are aged 17-23 yeas are the first Tongan hip-hop group to compete in an international dance competition.

If Onion Squad is successful, they will automatically enter into the Hip Hop World Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, United States where top hip hop crews from over 50 countries will compete.

The squad's goal is to come back with the experience and knowledge of competing abroad and grow the dance scene in Tonga.

The squad have been training since 2015, and are affiliated with a youth project, ICON Tonga.

Social media duo, ‘Tutu on the Beach’ held fundraising and assisted with the squad's training. There are no dance competitions in Tonga so the squad is taking it internationally, said Joshua Savieti.

The hip hop competition will be held at the Manukau Event Centre. 

Onion Squad members are Ti Taufahema (Lapaha), Selwyn Kinikini (Haveluloto), Fakaatui Manu (Haveluloto), Joe Veimau (Lapaha), Keti Veimau (Lapaha) and Paul Johansson (Tongatapu/Ha'apai)
