Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, September 24, 2004 - 19:00.  Updated on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 - 10:38.

‘Isileli Fatani (70) who was charged with the possession of one ounce of cocaine walked free from the Nuku‘alofa Supreme Court yesterday afternoon.

Chief Justice R. Webster dismissed the charge because of insufficient evidence.

The trial by jury began on Monday September 20 and 12 witnesses were called by the Crown, but after Chief Justice Webster listened to the final submission by the legal counsel, Linda Simiki for the Crown and Siosifa Tu'utafaiva for the defendant he dismissed the case.

‘Isileli was alleged to have in his possession one ounce of cocaine found by police at his residence in Kolonga.

The cocaine was alleged to have been brought over by Tevita Va'enuku from the United States when he came to stay with 'Isileli at his home at the end of 2000.
