A newly renovated Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit was opened at the Nuku'alofa Central Police Station on March 26, by Australian High Commissioner HE Mr Adrian Morrison and Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell.
Mr Morrison said domestic violence is not just a social issue, it is a criminal issue and those who use violence against family members or partners need to face legal consequences for their actions. The office helps clients feel safe and supported, and to have access to justice.
“We hope the office will encourage and reassure the victims of family violence that they can report to police with dignity and in privacy. ... We hope one day this office is no longer necessary.”
Police Commissioner Caldwell said that Tonga Police are commited to supporting the Domestic Violence Unit, and “to improving our response to victims and survivors of family and domestic violence.”
He said the building on its own would not change the experience of those seeking access to justice. Change is required at many different levels, to support the fight against domestic violence.
Tonga Police recently convened a Tonga Police Domestic Violence Advisory Group focusing on the Domestic Violence Unit.
“Three police officers and two investigators concentrating on domestic violence assaults will staff the office.”
Meanwhile, the Head of the Domestic Violence Unit, Sergeant ‘Ana Malia ‘Aho is currently undertaking Family Violence Prevention studies at Monash University in Melbourne.
