Landing of Tonga's fibre optic cable, at Sopu, Nuku'alofa on 11 June 2013.

A Police investigation is underway to determine the cause of Tonga's submarine fibre optic cable cut after receiving a report from Tonga Cable earlier this month.

Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell confirmed to Matangi Tonga today that he directed the initial police investigation to assess whether the damage to the submarine fiber optic cable was by human cause and whether such damage was caused deliberately or by accident.

He directed the investigation after receiving the initial report from Tonga Cable Ltd. on the cable outage on February 8 and the public's interest in the matter.

No other details were released.
