Lavulavu couple plead not guilty to fraud charges [1]

Former Minister of Internal Affairs ‘Akosita Lavulavu, and her husband, a former Cabinet Minister, ‘Etuate Lavulavu today pleaded not guilty to fraud charges at the Supreme Court.

Both are charged with six counts each of knowingly dealing with forged documents and obtaining money by false pretences, relating to a number of irregularities in an audit of the ‘Unuaki ‘o Tonga Royal Institute in 2016.

‘Etuate who is representing himself pleaded not guilty to all charges while his wife ‘Akosita, represented by Sifa Tu’utafaiva, pleaded not guilty to similar charges.

Hon Mr Justice Cato adjourned the case to be called on February 14 for a trial date to be set for this year.

Both accused elected to be tried by judge and jury.

The case was first called at the Supreme Court last week, after being committed from the Magistrate's Court.
