Digicel Tonga’s CEO Francis Thomsen said today that the outage in the submarine cable network that connects the Kingdom to the outside world has put “the country into digital isolation”.
“It’s been eight days with the outage and Digicel Tonga continues to face data connectivity issues because of the major fibre cut in the submarine cable resulting in the unstable data services,” he said in a statement this evening.
Digicel Tonga has now established 3G data connectivity nationwide that allows its customers to use the basic data services.
“All our customers can make international and local calls as well as send text messages both locally and internationally, however, using data services will only allow you to use basic services such as browsing to stay connected with family and friends.”
He advised that in view of the current situation, Digicel Tonga was reducing its out of bundle charge from $0.25 to $0.05.
Francis apologised for the disruptions over the last week and he said they were still working to fully restore their LTE 4G+ network.
