271 arrests during holiday operation [1]

A total of 271 arrests were made by Tonga Police from December 21, 2018 to January 3 this year, during the annual Christmas and New Year Operation.
Deputy Commissioner Pelenatita Fe’ao Vaisuai said today the arrests were 42 drunk driving, 31 common assaults, 29 thefts, 20 drugs, and 13 housebreaking, among other related offences.
A total of 255 police staff were deployed during this operation.
"Police are pleased with the outcome of the annual police operation during the Christmas and New Year holiday, with no road fatalities or death from violent crime."
She said the operation was launched to reinforce effective police service throughout the holiday period and to ensure everyone including visitors were safe while celebrating in Tonga.
A strengthened Police presence was visible throughout Tonga around the clock, with police on the beat, regular vehicle patrols to key target areas, removal of drunks from public places, and controlling breaches of liquor licence conditions.
Road safety measures were implemented through planned spot checks and alcohol breath testing in strategic locations to prevent further crashes due to drunk driving and speed on the roads.
The Deputy Commissioner acknowledged the commitment of police staff who worked throughout the holidays to ensure peace and public safety was maintained and thanked the public for sharing timely information and valued support to Police.
