Four soldiers charged in Vaini assault case [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, January 4, 2019 - 17:58

Four soldiers have been charged in relation to an alleged assault of a man in Vaini in November last year.

Acting Superintendent Sisi Toutai Tonga at the Mu’a Police Station said today, the accused men are charged with bodily harm and grievous bodily harm.

Their case is pending to be called at the Magistrate’s Court this month on a date to be confirmed, he said.

It is alleged that the victim had reportedly thrown something at a bus containing the soldiers. This reportedly resulted in some of the soldiers getting off the bus and the alleged assault occurred.

Pictures, allegedly of this assault, were posted and circulated on social media and it appeared to be an assault by uniformed men against this civilian, he said.
