Young driver dies in Ha’ateiho head-on crash [1]

A 25-year old man driving a government vehicle died on Saturday night, December 8 during a head on collision with another vehicle on Taufa’ahau Road in Ha’ateiho.
Police said today the deceased, from Fasi, was heading west from Folaha, when he crashed into two vehicles (at Nualei and Veitongo) before this fatal head on collision in Ha’ateiho, at around 8:00pm.
He died on impact. Speeding and alcohol are alleged to have been factors.
“When he got to Ha'ateiho, he allegedly overtook another vehicle in front colliding head on with the other vehicle heading from Nuku'alofa. The driver in this vehicle, was a mother from ‘Utulau who was with her two young children. She is in critical condition at Vaiola Hospital, and her two children sustained minor injuries,” said the police spokesperson.
This is the 21st road death so far this year, the highest ever recorded in Tonga. 2008 had recorded 20 road deaths.
“Tonga Police ask the public during the Christmas holiday to put safety first, avoid speeding and drunk driving in order to save their lives and others,” said the spokersperson.
