Two men of foreign nationality, reportedly, from New Zealand were arrested and charged in relation to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition confiscated on a yacht in Nuku'alofa. One has also been charged with indecent assault.
Acting Chief Superintendent Tevita Vailea said today Tonga Police had searched the yacht at Faua Wharf and arrested the accused that included the captain (47) and a crew member (39) on Monday, October 29. This was after finding a shotgun and 15 ammunitions in their possession.
Both accused were charged with possession of a firearm without a license and false declaration under the Immigration Act for failure to declare these items.
In addition, the crew member had also been charged with indecent assault alleged to have taken place on October 19.
The Acting Chief Superintendent said both accused had appeared at the Fasi Magistrate’s Court and were fined.
However, the crew member has the indecent assault case pending at the lower court.
No other details were released at this stage.
