A prison survey [2] by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that in December 2017 there were 57 Tongan-born prisoners serving time in Australian prisons. The official Government survey does not record ethnicity except for that of Australian Aborigines.

According to the survey, there were 41,202 inmates serving time in Australian prisons at the end of 2017. Of that number 7,629 were born outside of Australia. The largest number of foreign-born prisoners hailed from New Zealand (1,208), while the second largest hailed from Vietnam (911).

For Pacific Islanders, the survey revealed that there were 132 prisoners born in Fiji and 114 born in Samoa.
