Man charged in machete attack on police officer [1]

A 28-year-old man who injured a Senior Police Constable when he hit him on the head with a machete remains in custody to appear at the Fasi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 3.

Tonga Police said today the accused is charged with grievous bodily harm and obstruction of justice.

The attack took place at a home in Hofoa on Thursday night, August 23 when the officer was there to remove the accused, who had been trying get into a house during a domestic dispute.

When police arrived he was inside one of the houses and when the police officer opened the door, he allegedly hit him on the right side of the head with the machete.

The 36-year-old senior constable who sustained head injuries is in a stable condition at Vaiola Hospital.
