A girl (11) who was hit by a vehicle while waiting for a bus, has died in hospital from her injuries. A male driver, charged in regards to her death, was allegedly overtaking in the face of oncoming traffic on Bypass Road on Saturday.

Police today said the victim died at Vaiola Hospital at around 4:00pm on Sunday, July 15. 

The accident occurred on Saturday, July 14 when the accused driver who was heading west overtook a vehicle in front. He allegedly hit the young victim as he swerved to the side to escape colliding with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction. The victim was waiting for the bus with other members of her family.

The accused from Popua who is charged with reckless driving causing death remains in custody.

This is the 18^th road fatality so far this year in Tonga.
