Fiji’s leader of the opposition Sodelpa Party, Sitiveni Rabuka, a former coup leader and former Fiji Prime Minister, has been charged by anti-corruption officials relating to an alleged anomaly in his financial declarations for 2016 –17.
The charges come ahead of Fiji’s upcoming general elections due to be held later this year.
Mr Rabuka is due to appear in court tomorrow, 6 June and if found guilty, he may be ineligible to run in the elections against Mr Bainimarama.
Mr Rabuka told Radio New Zealand Pacific’s Jamie Tahana, that his high profile is making him a target.
Rabuka, led two military coups in 1987 and was later democratically elected Prime Minister of Fiji, from 1992 to 1999, much like Fiji’s current PM Bainimarama.
