The $66 million pa'anga major upgrade of a new Taufa’ahau Tupou IV Domestic Wharf and Terminal will be commissioned this week on Friday, June 1.
King Tupou VI is expected to commission the wharf, which he has named after his father, the late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. It was funded under Japan's grant-aid in a project aimed to better connect Tonga’s island groups.
The Prime Minister’s Office today said the ceremony starts at 10:00am.
The wharf has three ship berthing areas, one of 135m, two of 90m with a 120m turning basin, and 250m-breakwater wall. It's passenger terminal building will be partly powered by a solar panel installed on the roof with entrances and passageways having gentle slopes.
In addition, there is a 225 tonne underground rainwater reservoir and additional parking.
The construction started after a groundbreaking ceremony in April last year with TOA Corporation, a Japanese construction group carrying out the work.
