Brief 6.1 quake shakes Nuku'alofa [1]

A short but strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 was felt in Nuku'alofa at lunchtime today, and shook buildings in the capital for a few seconds.

The earthquake magnitude 6.1 occurred at 12.53 pm Tonga time, and according to the USGS its centre was located 110 km (65 miles) west of Nuku'alofa, at 21.172 degrees S and 176.277 degrees W. Its depth was 156.1 km (97 miles). No damage has been reported from the tremor.

It followed a moderate quake magnitude 5, at 6.45 am Tonga time. The morning earthquake was located 160km (100miles) south of Nuku'alofa, at a depth of 25 km (15.5 miles).
