The Fiji Under-20s ran in nine tries to demolish the Tonga Under-20s in the final round of the 2018 Oceania Rugby U20s Championship on Saturday 5 May in Gold Coast, Australia.
The Fijian backline appeared to have no problem in setting up overlaps on the Tongan defence. Many of Fiji’s tries were produced by excellent passing and offloads.
The Tonga U20s displayed a number of tackle breaking runs, but a failure to maintain ball possession became habitual and the Fijians quickly countered with every turnover. Tongan lock forward Pita’ofa Halaifonua was yellow carded in the 35th minute for repeated infringements.
The heavy loss is modest compared to the Tonga U20s defeats to the Junior Wallabies (91 – 7) on 1 May and New Zealand U20s (97 – 0) on 27 April.
New Zealand U20s won the championship after beating the Junior Wallabies 43 – 28.
