The relocation of the Tukutonga Rubbish Dump from Popua to the new $12 million pa...anga rubbish dump, Tapuhia, at Vaini that was to take place this month is postponed and awaits the formation of a board to administer the new operations.
Talita Helu of the Tonga Solid Waste Project said today that the formation of a board will be submitted to be discussed in tomorrow's Cabinet meeting, and if everything goes accordingly then the official handing over of the new rubbish facility from the Australian Government, who funded the project, to the Government of Tonga will most likely be held before the end of this month.
But the actual relocation of the rubbish dump to the new Tapuhia rubbish site is anticipated to take place at the end of the year, as there will be a lot of work to be completed once the board comes into formation, she said.
In the meantime three new rubbish trucks will arrive from New Zealand at the end of this month to take up the picking-up of rubbish throughout Tongatapu from Monday to Saturday, once Tapuhia becomes operational.
