Parramatta Eels second-row and Mate Ma’a Tonga veteran Tony “T-Rex” Williams has been ruled out for the entire 2018 season after he sustained a knee injury against the West Sydney Tigers on Sunday April 29. His injury was not in vain as the Eels defeated the Tigers 24 – 22, keeping their championship hopes alive.

It was revealed in a media statement by the Parramatta Eels yesterday 30 April, that Williams had suffered a rupture of his Anterior Cruciate Ligament on his right knee.

“Tony will consult with our medical staff over the next few days regarding the next steps for his recovery and rehabilitation”, the Eels stated.

“The Parramatta Eels will continue to support him during this time and wish him all the best on his recovery.”

The 29-year-old Williams has played for Tonga since 2008 and contributed to Mate Ma’a Tonga’s thrilling 26 – 24 victory over Fiji Bati in the 2017 Pacific Tests last year. An injury sustained during the game ruled Williams out of Mate Ma’a Tonga’s Rugby World Cup campaign.

Standing 6’4 feet tall and weighing 120 kilos, Williams has been noted as a powerful runner and tackle breaker. He played for the Kangaroos in 2011 and 2012.
