Accused bailed in meth bust [1]

Two men charged in a methamphetamine shipment bust from the United States on April 17 have been released on bail pending trial in Nuku'alofa.

The accused who have not been named at this stage were bailed upon strict conditions to appear at the Magistrate’s Court on July 31. Both had appeared in chambers at the lower court, police said today.

The methamphetamine, which had a street value of around $297,000 pa’anga, was concealed in a shipment from the United States.

A new Police Drug Taskforce in Nuku'alofa intercepted and arrested a 39-year-old man in a vehicle on By Pass Road, in possession of 297 grams of methamphetamine.

While, a 31-year-old man connected with this case was also arrested with 30.4 grams of cannabis already packed for sale.

Both have been charged with the possession of the illicit drugs.
