Monday, April 23, 2018 - 20:54. Updated on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 - 09:05.
ANZAC Day commemorates servicemen and women from Australia, New Zealand and Tonga who served and sacrificed in war, global conflict and peacekeeping operations around the world.
While ANZAC stands for "Australia New Zealand Army Corps", it will also remember the 460 Pacific Islanders who served overseas with the New Zealand and Australian forces during the First World War (1914-1918).
ANZAC Day 2018 will mark the landing at Gallipoli, which resulted in a very high number of allied soldiers being killed, wounded and recorded as missing. The commemoration acknowledges the ultimate sacrifices of all those who have died, and the contribution of all those who have served.
Captain Sila Siufanga, Regional Commander at the Salvation Army, will be the Officiating Minister.
Of the Tongan soldiers who joined the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary force, 14 died in the battlefields of Gallipoli, Turkey and also in France and Palestine during the First World War.
