Four police officers on trial for common assault [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, April 17, 2018 - 19:21

Four police officers, similarly charged with common assault that allegedly took place in Nuku’alofa in October last year during the arrest of a group of youths, have challenged the submission of a video footage of the alleged assault.

Kapine Havea, Filipe Langi, Sione Finau and Sione Paea, who have pleaded not guilty, appeared for the start of their summary trial on April 12, at the Fasi Magistrate’s Court.

Counsel for the accused challenged the submission of the video footage.

The trial was then adjourned to resume on April 19.

The assault is alleged to have been inflicted on Francis Norris (16) and another victim by the police officers.

The complainants were part of a group of youths who were out celebrating after watching the Mate Ma’a Tonga defeat Scotland on television on Sunday night, October 29. The assault is alleged to have taken place during an arrest for offences relating to disorderly behaviour.
