A criminal trial that was to start on April 3 in Neiafu, Vava'u, during a Supreme Court circuit has been adjourned after a man accused of indecent assault was reported to have fled Vava'u.
Mohi Halalupe from Vaimalo, who was charged with two counts of indecently assaulting an 18-year-old female last year, had been released on bail pending trial.
The accused did not turn up for his three-day trial and the court was told that he had apparently fled to Nuku'alofa.
Hon. Mr Justice Cato has issued a bench warrant for his arrest and and return to Neiafu.
Other cases
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is currently sitting in the outer island, from April 3-13. It will deal with arraignment of other criminal cases, including two accused charged with embezzlement from the Leiola Duty Free shop in Vava'u.
Around 20 family applications from adoption to divorce petitions would also be called.
The judge is accompanied by the registrar, supporting staff from the Supreme Court and staff from the Legal Aid Centre for Domestic Violence victims in Nuku'alofa.
The next Supreme Court circuit is to Ha'apai, from April 30 to May 5.
