A video recording of the 2014 Utah police shooting of an alleged gang leader Siale Angilau (25) was publicly released today following a decision by a United States District Judge John E. Dowdell on 9 March. A wrongful death lawsuit by Angilau’s family was dismissed on the same day.
The 24-second video recording shows Angilau charging towards a witness with a pen in hand. He attempted to stab the witness but missed and fell onto the floor. As he was on the floor, he was shot four times (in quick succession) by a nearby police marshal.
Angilau was an alleged leader of a local street gang called the “Tonga Crip Gang”. On the day of the tragic shooting April 21 of 2014, Angilau was in a federal courtroom in Salt Lake City facing federal racketeering charges for his involvement in organized crime.
The witness, Vaiola Mataele Tenifa, was a former member of the Tonga Crip Gang and was testifying in the witness box of the courtroom. The police marshal’s identity is currently under suppression.
