Court dates set for accused politicians [1]

'Etate Lavulavu, Hon. 'Akosita Lavulavu and Lord Tu'ivakano.

Tonga’s Minister of Internal Affairs Hon. ‘Akosita Lavulavu, former Cabinet Minister, ‘Etuate Lavulavu, and a former Prime Minister and a former Speaker of Tonga's Legislative Assembly, Lord Tu'ivakano will appear at the Nuku’alofa Magistrate’s Court on 26 March.

Hon. 'Akosita Lavulavu and her husband 'Etuate Lavulavu were arrested and charged with three counts of dealing with forged documents and another three counts for obtaining by false pretences on 3 March.

The charges relate to a number of irregularities in an audit of the ‘Unuaki ‘o Tonga Royal Institute in 2016. The couple established the institute.

Also appearing in the same court on the same day is the former Prime Minister and a former Speaker of Tonga’s Legislative Assembly, Lord Tu’ivakano.

Lord Tu’ivakano was arrested by the Tonga Police on 1 March and charged with making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining a Tongan Passport, perjury, acceptance of bribery and money laundering.
