Lasike rape case awaits judge...’s decision [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 17:30.  Updated on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 - 14:07.

The trial of nobleman Hon. Lasike on a rape charge ended today, July 27 in the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.

During the criminal trial, which started on Monday, July 24, the Crown called 10 witnesses and the defence called two witnesses, including the accused Hon. Lasike.

The presiding judge, Chief Justice Robin Webster on the first day of the hearing suppressed the details of the hearing.

The case is historical in a sense that it is the first time that a Tongan noble has ever been charged with rape. Following the submissions by the legal counsel of both parties, the Chief Justice said that because of the importance of the case he would reserve his decision to be given out properly either tomorrow afternoon or at 9:30am on Monday July 31.

Noble Lasike has been charged on three counts, one for the rape and two for the indecent assault of a staff member of the hotel he owns.

The counsel for the Crown is ...‘Aminiasi Kefu, and William Clive Edwards represents the accused.
