Fua'amotu Int'l Airport started operations today [1]

Fua’amotu International Airport has opened for operation from 1pm today, confirmed Viliami Ma’ake, CEO at Tonga Airports Ltd.

He said both the domestic and international airports were closed since Saturday evening due to Tropical Cyclone Gita which hit Tongatapu and 'Eua on the night of Monday February 12.

The domestic airport remains out of order due to damage caused by Gita and domestic flights will now operate out of Fua’amotu International Airport until it is restored.

Real Tonga, Fiji Airways and Air New Zealand flights were expected to arrive and depart today. Yesterday, the airport was open to military planes from Australia and New Zealand bringing in aid and also surveying and taking photos of the damage caused by Gita in Tonga.
