Hotel pay supervisor stole "ghost employees" payroll [1]

A former administration officer for the Tanoa Hotel, Selemana Fonua was found guilty of false accounting and theft of $21,299 pa’anga by the Tonga Supreme Court.

Selemana (39) was convicted on both counts on 19 January and awaits sentencing on 19 February 2018.  

The court was told that in 2015 the woman oversaw the wage payments of fellow hotel staff and labourers.

She allegedly wrote payments to “ghost names” – taking money for herself under the disguise of payments to non-existent employees.

She was alleged to have altered payroll spreadsheets on 3 April and 11 December, 2015.
