An American professional Rugby club, the Utah Warriors, have signed Tongan rugby legend and ‘Ikale Tahi all-time leading try scorer Fetu’u Vainikolo to their ranks. The Utah Warriors announced the signing last Friday 5 January.
Vainikolo stated that he was looking forward to a “new beginning in Utah” and was optimistic about the development of professional rugby in the United States.
“Everyone knows the massive potential that rugby has in America, and I can’t wait to be a part of it with the Utah Warriors.”
“I’ve played all over the world in the toughest competitions, but have never been a part of growing a club from the very beginning…it’s going to be a challenge but these are very exciting times in Utah.”
Vainikolo’s experience will undoubtedly be an invaluable asset for the Utah Warriors. The 32-year-old has played professional rugby in both New Zealand, France and England. He was starting player for the Otago Highlanders, Connacht and the Exeter Chiefs.
Vainikolo has made 28 appearances in the ‘Ikale Tahi jersey and played at the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. He is currently Tonga’s leading try scorer, having scored 17 tries for Tonga.
Warriors head coach Alf Daniels stated, “You can see from his highlights that he loves to score tries and can do so from almost anywhere. Someone with his experience and skill set just needs the ball to thrive, but once he arrives we’ll see where he fits with the team and will put him in the best position to succeed.”
