UN Votes - Resolution on Jerusalem.

Chart: United Nations website.

Tonga was one of 21 countries absent from voting at the United Nations headquarters, on December 21, when the UN passed a resolution opposing the United States' unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

US President Donald Trump called Jerusalem the capital of Israel on December 6 and began the process of moving his country's embassy to the city. The move sparked global condemnation from world leaders. The status of Jerusalem remains one of the main sticking points in efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

A total of 128 of the 193-member UN General Assembly agreed to resolve the Holy City dispute through “negotiations in line with relevant UN resolutions” another 35 abstained from voting, and 21 were absent. The resolution "calls upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem".

Only nine voted No, and supported the US position, including the Pacific islands countries of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and the Marshall Islands, along with Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Togo and the USA.

Among the 35 countries that abstained from voting were: Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Among the 128 countries that voted yes for the resolution (opposing the US recognition) were: New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Among the 21 countries that were absent were: Samoa, Tonga and Timor-Leste.
