Less crime in 2017, says Tonga Police [1]

Tonga experienced less crime this year compared to last year with a 21% reduction in reported crime.

Tonga Police report that 2017 was a busy year which saw numerous operations being conducted throughout Tonga. Most of the crimes were committed in Nuku’alofa which accounted for 70% of total overall reported crime in the country.

Police operations included controlling chaotic Rugby League World Cup celebrations, which resulted in 451 arrests. There were also 788 arrests made over the year in Operation Safe Streets, an operation targeting alcohol related offending.

Tonga Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell said that he was pleased with the efforts of Tonga Police.

said, “We will continue to focus on reducing crime and I would like to personally thank and commend the efforts of our Police staff who continue to do their best to keep our communities safe.”

“We need to continue our focus on victims, prevention activities and efforts to reduce alcohol related crime.”
