Parliament to elect next PM on Monday [1]

Tonga’s 26 members of parliament will elect Tonga’s new Prime Minister on Monday, 18 December.

Two of the elected members of parliament have been nominated as candidates.

The identity of the candidates and the two elected members of parliament who nominated the candidates will be revealed before members of parliament cast their votes in a secret ballot.

Following the selection of a Prime Minister members of parliament will proceed and select a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker of the House. 

The members who lodged the two secret nominations for PM were Hon. Pohiva Tu’I’onetoa, the People’s Representative for Constituency No. 10 and Samiu Vaipulu, the People’s Representative for Constituency No. 15.

The Interim Speaker of parliament, Lord Tangi is inviting the Media to disseminate news live from the House on Monday morning.
