Two serial thieves who were jailed earlier this year for robberies committed in 2015 and 2016 – Rodney Toki (21) and Tevita Vaka (29) – have both had their prison sentences extended after the Supreme Court of Tonga found them guilty of committing a break-in robbery in May last year.
The court heard that on 15 May 2016, Rodney and Tevita broke into a Fangaloto home and stole over $18,000 pa’anga worth of goods including a Toyota vehicle and a $3,000 laptop. The home was occupied by a visiting family from Samoa, who were asleep during the time of the robbery.
Rodney and Vaka were both already serving lengthy sentences for two robberies including the armed robbery and assault of a couple in Nuku’alofa in February last year.
Rodney Toki’s sentence was extended by 7 months and Tevita Vaka’s by 10 months. The overall sentence for Toki is now 6 years and 7 months imprisonment. For Vaka, the overall sentence is now 12 years and 10 months imprisonment.
