Law Week 2017 advocates good leadership and rule of law [1]

The "Law and Good Leadership" is this year's theme for Tonga Law Week, which runs until November 10 in Tongatapu.

Acting Attorney General 'Aminiasi Kefu said today this is the 10th year of delivering Law Week, "to keep reminding the public of the importance of complying with the principles of the rule of law, and also make available a platform to have dialogue on the application of the law, and how it can be improved to better serve and protect the community and future generations.”

Today's open event for the public and guests at Digicel Square, presented displays from the Attorney General's office, Tonga Police, the Ombudsman and other stakeholders, with various competitions on the theme for students, 

Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell urged youths to become good leaders, and to have the courage to make the right decisions.

He said a good leader must be able to have a positive influence on changing behavior and a good leader must be honest with others and themselves, among other values.

“You are all leaders and you carry a responsibility on your young shoulders for Tonga’s future. I would encourage you do look at careers in law. Follow your dreams and work hard to reach your goals."

The program started with a Prayer Breakfast on November 6 with Queen Nanasipau’u as guest of honour, launching a revised legislation website, while the ombudsman 'Aisea Taumoepeau, made a special address on good leadership from an Ombudsman's perspective.

Other programs include daily radio talk back shows and village visits in the evenings throughout Tongatapu.

This year the Attorney General's office is partnering with the Tonga National Leadership Development Forum, for the event.
