Twenty nine people were arrested and charged for alleged drunk driving, disorderly behaviour and drinking in public places, mainly in Central Nuku’alofa, over the weekend from October 6-8, in Operation Safe Streets to prevent alcohol-fueled crimes in Tongatapu.
Eighteen arrests were made in the Central Nuku’alofa area, 10 at Mu’a district and one in Nukunuku.
This is a slight decrease from 32 arrests made the previous weekend.
The operation is removing drunks from public places. Police continue to enforce the intoxicating liquor law within liquor licensed premises, said a police spokesperson today.
“This has resulted in written warnings being issued for violations of license conditions by licensed operators. Violations include selling alcohol to underage persons, operation beyond permitted time and in the case of some of the clubs, allowing persons who are not members or members guests to enter and consume alcohol in the club."
