Least Developed Countries (LDC) are calling on the global community to do more at the upcoming Climate Change negotiations (COP23) in Bonn, Germany, next month.

Ministers and Heads of Delegation from the LDC Group met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 5 October, to discuss the key issues of the negotiations. They expressed their countries’ dedication to ambitious climate action and committing to fully support Fiji presiding over COP23.

Mr Gebru Jember Endalew, Chair of the LDC Group said they represent 47 of the world’s poorest countries that are “continuing to take the lead on ambitious climate action, pursuing sustainable, low carbon and climate resilient pathways to protect our people and our planet”.

The LDC group has made a list of requirements from developing countries that include an increase of funds and resources to implement climate adaptation projects, speed up the global uptake of renewable energy and energy efficient technology, and calling for more progress in phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, among others.

Mr Endalew said “LDCs face unique and unprecedented challenges in working to lift our people out of poverty while achieving sustainable development.

“Ministers here in Addis Ababa have identified the need for global solidarity and the support of the international community to help LDCs achieve our ambitious climate plans.“

It was highlighted that global response to climate change must be fair and equitable and countries actions should be consistent with their responsibility for climate change and their capacity to respond.

"Under the Paris Agreement the world has laid out a vision for achieving a greener, healthier and brighter future for all - the LDCs hope that the upcoming negotiations will generate finance and other support to ensure all countries of the world can make this vision a reality."

The COP23 will take place between 6 – 17 November 2017 in Bonn, Germany.
