Siale Angilau

An audio recording of the 2014 courtroom shooting of Siale Angilau (of Tongan descent) has been published in Utah.

In the dramatic 3-minute long audio recording, at least four gunshots can be heard, as Angilau was shot by a U.S. marshal, after he charged towards a witness during a federal racketeering trial aimed at the Tongan Crip Gang.

The Salt Lake Tribune published the audio recording on Youtube (Warning: audio contains violence and strong language).

The tragic shooting occurred on April 21 of 2014, when Angilau (25) of Utah, died after he was shot by a U.S. marshal in a Salt Lake City courtroom. Siale was on trial regarding his alleged involvement with the “Tonga Crip Gang”, a local Utah gang made up predominately of Tongans.

The marshal shot Siale after he charged towards a witness with a pen in hand. The witness, Vaiola Mataele Tenifa, was a former member of the Tonga Crip Gang and was testifying in the witness box of the courtroom.

Siale’s family have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. Marshals Service and the marshal who fired shots at Siale. A video recording of the incident was seen by Siale’s family and by their attorney, Bob Sykes.

Sykes told the Salt Lake Tribune, "It looks like he was down in the witness box and was finished off in the witness box.”

"You see his head come up for a minute and then come back down…I just don't see a necessity for that here”, Sykes added.

The video recording of the incident remains under seal, however a coalition of media outlets are pushing for the release of the video footage and have entered the wrongful death lawsuit in order to force a release of the video footage. Siale’s parents have not objected to the media’s intervention.
