Tonga's 2006 Miss Heilala Pageant began yesterday afternoon June 27 with the inauguration ceremony of 11 Miss Heilala contestants at the Vai Ko Lata Ai Beach, Fua‘amotu.

A total of 14 contestants are to participate in this year...s pageant, but two overseas contestants due to arrive in Tonga at the end of the week, are Miss Tonga USA and Miss Black Pearl Suites. Meanwhile, the Miss ...Eua 2006 will be crowned on Friday June 30 after the ...Eua National Park Festival.

The theme for this year...s Miss Heilala Pageant is ...Our Heritage... and during the contestant...s first public appearance yesterday, they were introduced individually to the guest of honor, HRH Princess Latufuipeka Tuku...aho, a granddaughter of the King of Tonga. The Fua...amotu Youth also held cultural performances during the ceremony.

The first judging event of the pageant will begin on Saturday July 1 with the contestant...s presentation and interview, followed by the Miss Tau...olunga competition on July 3, a float parade on July 4, and the sarong and talent category on July 6.

The final judging event will be held on July 7, with the best contemporary island creation and stage interview and the crowning of the new Miss Heilala for 2006-07.
