Police search for stolen tsunami siren [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 - 19:34

Police are still looking for two civil defence sirens that were stolen from a pole in Kolovai earlier this month.

Three sirens were stolen but only one has been recovered. The sirens are part of a civil defence warning system that alerts the public to impending natural disasters such as tsunami.

Chief Inspector Sofilisi Fifita said today a man had been arrested in relation to the theft, but has not been charged at this stage.

"Investigation is still ongoing," he said.

The three sirens were installed 25m high up on the pole. The NEMO (National Emergency Management Office) employees reported it missing to police.

He said one siren was recovered near the Liahona area before the suspect was arrested on Sunday night, August 20 in Lapaha.
