The Governor of Guam, Eddie Baza Calvo, yesterday dismissed statements made by the North Korean military threatening to attack Guam with long range missiles. The threat was made by a North Korean Army Spokesman on Wednesday only hours after "fire and fury" threats were made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Governor Calvo made a televised special address to the Guamanian public yesterday morning stating, “I know we woke up to media reports of North Korea's talk of revenge on the United States and this so-called new-found technology that allows them to target Guam"

"I want to reassure the people of Guam that currently there is no threat to our island or the Marianas,” Mr Calvo said.

"My Homeland Security advisor, who is in communications with Homeland Security and Department of Defence notes that there is no change in threat level resulting from North Korea events.”

Governor Calvo also stressed that Guam was prepared for any “eventuality”.

“Guam is American soil and we have 200,000 Americans in Guam and the Marianas. We are not just an American installation,” he added.

“I want to ensure that we are prepared for any eventuality.”

The North Korean army made the announcement in a statement distributed by its state-run news agency that the military is reviewing a plan to create an "enveloping fire" in areas around the U.S. territory, located in the Pacific Ocean about 2,100 miles from North Korea. There are about 7,000 US military personnel on Guam.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has threatened to launch a missile strike targeting an area near Guam.
