Ngani Laumape (of Tongan descent) has finished the 2017 Super Rugby season as the tournament’s top try scorer, having scored 17 tries for his team, the Wellington Hurricanes.

Laumape was only one try away from becoming the highest try scorer in the tournament’s 23-year history. His record levels with the 17 tries scored by Joe Roff (Brumbies) in 1997 and Rico Gear (Crusaders) in 2005.

The 24-year-old New Zealand born centre initially started in Rugby League, having played 30 games for the New Zealand Warriors from 2013 to 2015. He has only played Rugby Union professionally for less than two years (2016 – 2017). He played two games for the All Blacks this year, scoring one try against the British & Irish Lions.
