A 42-year-old Tongan man visiting New Zealand is in critical condition with serious head injuries at an Auckland hospital after he was attacked in Auckland at around 3:40am on Saturday, July 29.

The victim, who has not been named, is suspected to have been assaulted by occupants of a vehicle that stopped beside him as he was walking down Kitchener St, in the Auckland CBD.

New Zealand police stated that the victim was walking in the middle of the road, allegedly impeding traffic. The suspects stopped their vehicle beside the victim and words were exchanged. A short time later, the car speedily drove away with the victim left lying on the ground.
