A man who was shot on the leg in Holonga, Vava'u, early Friday morning, July 21 was hospitalized at Vaiola Hospital after being flown to Tongatapu for treatment.

It is alleged that the victim was shot by a 42-year-old man with a shotgun at around 2:30am, said a police spokesperson.

The incident allegedly arose from an argument between two male cousins, including the accused. It was reported that the accused arrived home in his vehicle to find his cousin drunk with others in front of his home. He argued with his cousin because he was not happy with them drinking there.

Police said that another man is alleged to have tried to stop their argument. This man shortly after, left the argument and crossed the road and met the victim and were walking away to another destination.

"At this time the accused who was angry with this man for interfering with their argument allegedly got his shotgun from the vehicle to shoot him," she said. It was dark and the victim who was walking beside this man was hit by the shot.

The accused has been charged with bodily harm and possession of a firearm without a license.
