Cows have a taste for watermelon.

Seven cows were shot dead by a farmer in ‘Utui, Vava’u on the morning of Tuesday, July 25 after he found his watermelon destroyed.

"The owner of the cows has decided not to lay any charges against this farmer," said a police spokesperson today in Nuku'alofa.

The shooting incident was reported to have taken place between 9:00-10:00am, when the farmer arrived and found the cows in front of his plantation and his watermelon destroyed by the cows.

He got a .22 rifle and shot all of them.

Police visited the site and talked with the owner of the cows who said he will not press charges against the farmer. "We have confirmed that he is a registered holder of the firearm," she said.

Police did not give out the names as no complaint was lodged nor were there any charges filed.
