Two men have been charged for the assault of Kelekolio Tapueluelu, a man who sought police protection after an incident in Kolofo'ou, following a public forum hosted by the Prime Minister.

Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell said police took necessary precautions to protect the safety of Tapueluelu following a complaint of assault that occurred on Wednesday, June 14.

The first accused was arrested on Thursday, June 15, and the second a 47-year-old man was arrested on Friday, June 16. They have been similarly charged with assault and will appear at the Magistrate's Court on 30 June.

It is alleged that the victim was approached and assaulted by the accused on Railway Road.

The incident is said to have taken place after a public forum hosted by the Prime Minister on 12 June, when Tapueluelu is said to have expressed opposing views towards the cancelling of the Pacific Games 2019.

Police inquiries continue.
