Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, May 30, 2017 - 17:40

A soldier trainer who injured a recruit by burning him with an iron has been court-martialed and kicked out of the Tongan army.

The iron was electric but no details of the assault or the nature and extent of the injuries have been released by the military police, who confirmed that the offence took place.

They stated that the soldier, who was responsible for training a class of new recruits got a dishonourable discharge, after being found guilty of injuring a male recruit when he burnt him with an iron.

"On 11 May, His Majesty’s Armed Forces (HMAF) received a complaint from the parents of the recruit who was training in the 61st Combined Basic Recruit Intake, at Taliai Military Camp."

This soldier, who was not named, then faced military offence charges and was found guilty and given a dishonourable discharge after a court martial held at the Sene Military Camp in Nuku'alofa.

"We do not tolerate the violation of the laws of this country or that of HMAF," said a statement from the military.
