Ha'’apai By-election date uncertain [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, May 26, 2006 - 18:20.  Updated on Saturday, May 3, 2014 - 19:32.

The date for the Ha'apai By election to replace Hon. Fineasi Funaki, the former Ha'’apai No. 2 People'’s Representative has yet to be confirmed.

Pita Vuki, the Supervisor for the Election said today that he did not think the by -election could be held before Parliament opens next week, but the Constitution allows the House to convene and a by election could be held later.

He said the date for a Ha'’apai by-election is to set from the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Fred Sevele but since he is away in a meeting in Japan, they are waiting on the Acting PM Hon. Dr Viliami Tangi to set a date.

Meanwhile Fineasi has submitted his resignation as Ha'’apai No. 2 People's Representative to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tu'’i Ha'’angana earlier this week.

The 2006 Parliament session will be officially opened by King Taufa'’ahau Tupou IV on June 1.
