Tonga’s Court of Appeal will hear six appeals from March 9-10, at the Supreme Court in Nuku’alofa with judgments to be delivered on Thursday, March 16.

Cases for the 2017 session include four civil and two land matters. One of the civil appeals is by Rizvi Jurangpathy, CEO of the Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC) in a case against the Commissioner for Public Relations.

This is an appeal regarding a Supreme Court ruling last year which dismissed Rizvi's application when he sought an interim stay of an investigation by the Public Relations Commissioner until his defamation action has been heard in the Magistrate's Court and determined. 

Rizvi's conduct is the subject of the investigation by the Commissioner for Public Relations.

Land case

Another appeal, is a land case between Sione Maile, Mo’ui Fo’ou ‘ia Kalaisi Fellowship and Sione ‘Amanaki against the Siasi Tokaikolo 'ia Kalaisi.

The Land Court in a ruling last year ordered the Mo’ui Fo’ou ‘ia Kalaisi to vacate a property of the Siasi Tokaikolo ‘ia Kalaisi at Ha’ateiho within 30 days from November 9, 2016.

The Court of Appeal session opens at 9:00am on Thursday, March 9.
