Kato Kakala Latavao holds cherished memories of 45 years service with Tonga Red Cross Society. 17 February 2017.

"Respecting humanity and their dignity," has been a guiding principle for Kato Kakala Latavao (72) through over four decades of service with the Tonga Red Cross Society who recognised her today as the South Pacific region's longest serving staff member.

Kato Kakala retired today Friday, February 17 after 45-years with the Tonga Red Cross Society. At a heartfelt farewell ceremony this evening at the Nuku'alofa headquarters of the Tonga Red Cross Society, Secretary-General Sione Taumoefolau, board members, staff and volunteers appreciated Kato's dedication and service.

"It has been a pleasure to have been working with the Tonga Red Cross," she told Matangi Tonga.

Kato said she had over the years been involved in teaching the first-ever first aid courses on the island as well as many other duties.

"It is an honour for me the stand in your midst today with a humble heart and to say a few words of gratitude," she said during her farewell address.

Kato thanked the Queen Mother Halaevalu Mata’aho for her very insightful vision and never ending support.

"She has been the rock of the Tonga Red Cross Society for many years and knowing that she is the Royal President, is our pride and joy."

"To fellow staff members and Tonga Red Cross volunteers, we know what we do is not an easy task. We have together faced hunger and thirst in our field of work. However, we have stayed true to our fundamental principles in respecting humanity and their dignity," she said.

Also at the event were members from the New Zealand Red Cross International including Thomas Gurtner, its Program Manager as well as members from Tonga Red Cross various stakeholders.
